Social Structure
(the feudal system)
Describe your chosen topic
Society within the medieval times was influenced by a social structure called Feudalism. The social structure was divided into 4 categories which included lots of different groups of people. Each category played a part in how the other category lived. For instance, at the top of the pyramid was the monarch which included the king. The king was the ruler of the land, he shared some of his land with the tenants- in- chief. They paid for rent in the form of maintaining the land and the armies for the king. Next was the tenants in chief. This included the lords and the bishops. They provided fully equipped knights to serve in the monarch's army as well as teaching them to fight and use a variety of weapons. Thirdly was the sub-tenants or knights. The knights received land from the tenants in chiefs in return for fighting wars for the king. Lastley, the peasants. This category had the largest population in the social structure as well as being the one with the least amount of money. The sub - tenants allocated spare land for the peasantry. Peasants had to pay for the use of this land by working on the knights land as well as their own. They paid taxes in the form of crops that they grew. Overall, the Social Structure in the Medieval Times was very politically diverse.
